Singing River Equine Rescue

Rescued Horse Walks Again

Unable to walk, dehydrated, and abandoned: This is the condition Singing River Equine Rescue found Wheeler, a ten-year-old Spotted Saddle Horse, on a sweltering summer day in Alabama.

Hoof Laceration

“He was abandoned, could not walk, and was trapped in a heavily wooded area,” said Kristi Mitchell of Singing River Equine Rescue. “He would have died of dehydration if no one had found him.”

Singing River Equine Rescue (SRER) is a nonprofit organization located in Florence, Alabama. They are dedicated to providing relief for abused, neglected, and abandoned horses. Once rehabilitated, SRER finds permanent homes for these abandoned horses.

Doing what they do best, SRER rescued Wheeler from near death. A local veterinarian assessed his health. According to Kristi, Wheeler was in bad shape and even had a laceration that spanned the width of one of his hooves. The veterinarian instructed SRER to treat Wheeler with antibiotics and to keep his hoof clean. The vet said it could take up to six months before they would see improvement.

SRER is familiar with the impact Life Data® products have on the health of horses and their hooves, so they began feeding Farrier’s Formula® to Wheeler to help with the recovery. Soon after, they began applying Life Data® Hoof Clay® to the hoof laceration.

“We used the Hoof Clay for around three weeks, then the veterinarian came back to check on Wheeler. He could not believe the improvement in the hoof laceration,” said Kristi.

Life Data® Hoof Clay® is a pliable antimicrobial clay which easily packs and remains in place within hoof defects, old nail holes and cracks. The clay is also formulated to provide continuous long-term protection against a wide spectrum of bacterial and fungal invasions which cause poor hoof quality, wall separations, crumbling horn, White Line Disease, and Thrush.

“We were very impressed with how the Hoof Clay s

tayed intact. Wheeler was wearing a boot on his hoof. After a lot of rain, we took the boot off and applied the Hoof Clay. We left the boot off for three days. On the third day, we could still smell the Hoof Clay on the bottom of his hoof,” says Kristi.

Farrier’s Formula® is a pelleted hoof and coat supplement that provides essential nutrients that help promote the growth and health of hooves. When fed in conjunction with regular application of Life Data® Hoof Clay®, horse owners are not only promoting hoof growth nutritionally but also protecting the hoof from further issues.

After 3 months of using Farrier’s Formula® in conjunction with Life Data® Hoof Clay®, SRER has seen major improvement in Wheeler’s hoof. So much so, that Wheeler is now walking and acting like a normal horse.

“Hoof Clay and Farrier's Formula contributed greatly to Wheeler's remarkable recovery,” says Kristi.

"Hoof Clay was the only product I used, and that included supplements. She's a 22 year old QH mare, and was only on grass for the entire time, no extra feed or hay."

June 1: Some sort of infection that continued to absess. Cleaned it out, and packed it with hoof clay.

HClay3 CleanedOut6 20 CleanedOut2 Marie S June 20: Solid hoof there, I didn't feel comfortable trying to take out more. No infection as of now.
HClay4 July 13 CleanedOut Marie S July 13: Six weeks later. Sorry about all the blood! Kept it clean and packed with hoof clay and it's grown back so well, better than we thought!
HClay5 July 13 CleanedOutCloseUp Marie S July 13: Better shot from my farrier, Brad Paulk
HClay6 After BeingUseful Marie S July 13: Being useful :) I wouldn't put myself and a saddle on her, but she doesn't mind the tots at all.
12 Weeks Progress These are from August 24, exactly 12 weeks after the initial "carving" out of her hoof. This time we also applied the liquid hoof disinfectant made by Life Data before packing in the Hoof Clay. The second picture is of my farrier applying the clay. We pack in as much as possible and then smoothe out the excess so it it flush with the rest of her foot.
